The alarm calls of the noisy spurfowl

The alarm calls of the noisy spurfowl When in the bush we use all our senses to track and locate mammals, birds and reptiles. Tracks and pooh on the road from leopard, lion, hyena or wild dog can give some good indications of their behaviour and path, helping greatly to find your favourite animals. But there is also another way that may help you: the behaviour of birds. Birds such as this Swainson’s spurfowl can be a real help to guides (and of course their guests), as their alarm calls and sudden flight can indicate the presence of a leopard, snake or other predator. So next time you visit the Reserve or go on a safari anywhere, don’t forget to watch out for the birds that give away the sometimes-stealth position of a mammal that is hidden in the bush.
