Morning at Mogorosi

“One of my favourite ways to spend a morning is sitting at a waterhole waiting to see what appears. Even if there are no animals or birds to watch, I’m happy sketching tree shapes and waiting. During our most recent visit to Limpopo-Lipadi we spent the morning at Mogorosi waterhole for a couple of hours. My plan was to paint the landscape but there was so much animal activity that I couldn’t concentrate, so I put my brushes down and enjoyed the scene unfolding before us. Read more: (link in bio)
The impala were the first to arrive – dozens of them, looking trim and bright in the sun. They streamed in from every direction, and as one herd was leaving, another was arriving. We estimated there were over 200 in total. A couple of giraffes towered over them, then placed their feet far apart and leaned down for a drink. When they finished, they snapped their heads up, scattering all the nearby impala. Flocks of guineafowl came and went, drinking in a line at the edge of the water, then chasing each other, kicking up dust and generally being noisy and fidgety.
A small group of zebra hung back in the distance – their stripes making them difficult to see against the dry, dusty bush. Three impressive male kudu appeared, their spiral horns glinting in the sun. They stepped carefully around fallen logs and down to the water where they also quenched their thirst. A troop of baboons ran across the open ground, leaving one as lookout in a tree near us, then after a quick drink they searched through elephant dung for snacks and groomed each other.
Finally, as if he were the main act on a stage, a large white rhino bull ambled down, and after standing in thick bush for a few minutes, walked out into full view, had a drink, followed by a mud-bath, then walked off into the bush. At this point we decided we would also head away for a drink and breakfast, after our lovely, action-packed morning at Mogorosi.”
