Look up and see!

Although game viewing has been excellent during the Botswana summer, the lush vegetation adds an extra challenge—tall grasses and dense bushes can even hide elephants from sight! Plains animals frequently take to the roads, where they have a clearer view of their surroundings, while big cats seem to avoid the morning dew on the grass by taking to the drier sand roads.

But the green season isn’t just about the wildlife on the ground—it’s also a spectacular time for birding. The skies and water-filled pans come alive with incredible bird species.

This is the best time of year to witness European bee-eaters before they migrate back to Europe, busily feeding on butterflies and insects. Different whydahs, with their striking long tails, put on elaborate displays to compete for mates. Fluffy ducklings are growing up, and we prepare to say goodbye to the departing migrants—swallows, European rollers, and carmine bee-eaters—until they return next summer.
