Everyday Wonders in the Bush

Co-owner Mauro visits Limpopo-Lipadi regularly and always finds great stories and photos to bring back home. And luckily, he also shares them here with us:

“Life in the bush is full of small, unforgettable moments. One morning, we came across a zebra mare standing quietly in the tall grass, her foal tucked in close behind her. The baby almost disappeared into her stripes. It was a beautiful reminder of how nature works—those stripes aren’t just for show; they’re protection and reassurance that life continues out here, season after season.

Later that same day, we found an impala drinking from a natural waterhole. The reflection was so clear, I actually had to flip the photo to figure out which way was up. It’s funny how nature makes you look twice and see things from a different angle.

Then there are the smaller, more colourful moments—like spotting a lilac-breasted roller perched high on a thorny tree. Its feathers seem to include every color imaginable—turquoise, pink, violet. It’s one of those birds that makes you stop and stare, even if only for a few seconds.

Some encounters are quieter but just as memorable. On a night drive, we spotted a bushbaby frozen in the spotlight. Big amber eyes, tiny fingers, and a half-chewed leaf in its mouth—it looked as curious about us as we were about it. The bush doesn’t sleep. It just changes pace at night.

And then there are moments that really stick with you—like watching a young rhino calf stay close to its mother. Every calf born in Limpopo-Lipadi is something to be proud of. These animals need space and protection, and every new life is a sign we’re doing something right.”
