Downstream Along the Limpopo River

By: Limpopo-Lipadi | Date: Sep 4, 2025 | Reserve

“…the great, grey-green, greasy Limpopo River…” – Kipling had a point.

Driving downstream along the river that borders our Reserve is one of the most adventurous and beautiful routes co-owners and guests at Limpopo-Lipadi can take.

We pass quiet river bends and Harry’s Camp—where we have unforgettable bush dinners under the stars, serenaded by hippos grunting and snorting just beyond the firelight.

At Daily’s, a sandy stretch near Daily’s Koppie, the tale goes that a woman was once taken by a croc while doing her washing—a reminder that the river keeps its secrets.

The rocky road winds sharply up and down the ridges, through ancient trees and sweeping views. Axle-breaking, tire-popping terrain, but worth every bump.

It’s a drive that demands attention but rewards generously. We usually end it with a sundowner at the viewpoint—one of the most spectacular spots in the Reserve. From this high perch, you look across the broad river and its great stone slabs, all the way into South Africa. On our side: the Reserve in all its rugged glory, framed by the distinctive rise of Lipadi Hill.

A drive full of stories, beauty, and just enough thrill to make it unforgettable.
