Sunset Makes for Stunning Photography

The much-fabled African sunset isn’t just the perfect moment for a sundowner—it’s also a golden opportunity for photography, whether you’re carrying a camera or just your phone.
Every season brings its own magic. In the dry, hot months of October and November, sunsets turn an even deeper red than usual—thanks to the fine Kalahari dust drifting in from the west of Limpopo-Lipadi. During the summer rains, dramatic skies and shifting clouds often cast spectacular rays of light, spotlighting wildlife and transforming the bush into a natural stage—like the golden wildebeest in the photo.
Photographing into the light can feel daunting, but don’t let it scare you off. Embrace the backlight to capture bold silhouettes, or—if you’re comfortable adjusting your camera settings—use exposure compensation (EV) to bring your subject out of the shadows, like we did with the juvenile martial eagle here. Or simply experiment and have fun with it.
Just don’t wait too long—the sun doesn’t linger. But not to worry, tomorrow’s sunset promises another chance to get that perfect shot.
