Learning in the Bush

Since joining his parents on visits to Limpopo-Lipadi from the age of seven, Lucas has developed a deep connection with the Reserve, its wildlife, its people and its rhythm. Now, as a young adult, he returns not only to enjoy the bush but also to contribute to it through volunteer work:

“I first came to Limpopo-Lipadi in 2012, and I have grown to love the Reserve, its wildlife and the amazing community that surrounds it. Over the years, it has become a second home.

I had the chance to volunteer in both August 2023 and August 2025, joined by friends from school and university. We all wanted to get involved, to learn, and to experience the Reserve in a different way. My favourite job was doing tyre surgery, taking tyres apart and repairing punctures. It was practical, hands-on work and a great way to pick up skills I know will be useful when I travel through Africa in the future.

The toughest task was taking down a fence. With simple tools and the heat of the sun, it was hard work, but finishing it felt incredibly rewarding.

One day, an unexpected bush fire broke out. What started as a normal day quickly turned into a test of teamwork. Everyone came together, and it was amazing to see how well the Reserve handled it. Something that could have gone badly became one of the most unforgettable experiences of our stay.

To anyone thinking about volunteering here, I would say: absolutely do it. You will work hard, learn a lot, and feel part of something real and meaningful. It is a chance to connect with nature and the people who make Limpopo-Lipadi what it is.”
