When the Unexpected Finds You at Limpopo-Lipadi

One of the joys of spending time at Limpopo-Lipadi Wildlife & Wilderness Reserve is that no two outings are ever the same. Even the most familiar sundowner spot can turn into something special, simply because you never know who else might decide to join you.

Recently, a group of co-owners headed to one of the large waterholes for a relaxed sundowner. The light was beautiful, drinks and snacks were unpacked, and everyone was settling in for one of those calm, golden sunsets the reserve is known for. Just then, friends arrived with fresh news: they had run into the breeding herd of elephants, and the herd might be making its way towards the waterhole.

Not long after, the elephants appeared on the far side of the water. The group watched quietly, keeping a respectful distance. A few young bulls then drifted away from the herd and started moving closer, drawn by curiosity rather than intent. The guides gently asked everyone to step back into the vehicle and stay still, letting the elephants decide how close they wanted to come.

The young bulls walked right up to the cars, sniffing and inspecting without any sign of stress. Their relaxed posture and slow, unhurried movements showed that they were simply exploring. With the guides keeping a close eye on their behaviour, everyone sat quietly, drinks in hand, taking in a moment that felt both intimate and entirely natural.

It was a reminder of how wildlife encounters unfold best when we allow animals to set the pace. At Limpopo-Lipadi we are fortunate to share space with wildlife that is often comfortable enough to come close, as long as we give them the freedom to choose.

A peaceful sunset, good company, and a handful of curious young elephants turning an ordinary sundowner into an unforgettable experience.
