Summer-ready birds

It’s the season to be jolly. And here in our corner of the bush, summer doesn’t just mean greener landscapes and booming insects. It also marks the start of the breeding season for birds. And when birds decide it’s time to impress, they take it surprisingly seriously.
To make a lasting impression on potential partners, many males change into striking breeding plumage with bold colours, longer tails and, in some cases, behaviour that seems a bit enthusiastic. The African paradise flycatcher and the different paradise whydah are good examples, suddenly looking as if they have stepped out in their finest. Other southern African show-offs include the pin-tailed whydah, various widowbirds with their sweeping tails and the bright southern red bishop.
Then there are the southern masked weavers. They do not change their attire for the occasion, but they make up for it by becoming the craftsmen of the bush. The males weave intricate nests with great determination, hoping their chosen female will approve. Some even build several nests so she can select the one she finds most promising.
Whether showing off colourful feathers, impressive tails or perfectly woven nests, Limpopo-Lipadi’s birds are busy announcing summer in their own way. Keep an eye out during drives or as you sit around your lodge. There is always something happening when breeding season is here.
