Breakfast with the Flycatchers

Sabine and Yves, co-owners of Limpopo-Lipadi, were lucky enough to spend eight unforgettable days at the Reserve between Christmas and New Year. Here is their story:

While the entire trip was filled with wildlife wonders, one of our most cherished rituals became our morning breakfast at the Mogobe Bar. Just a stone’s throw from our seats, a pair of African Paradise Flycatchers had begun their breeding process.

Their nest was a tiny masterpiece, a perfectly shaped cup decorated with blue-grey lichen, blending so beautifully into the tree that we felt genuinely privileged to have spotted it at all. Once seen, it became impossible to ignore, and each morning we found ourselves watching quietly, not wanting to disturb the rhythm of their lives.

The flycatchers worked as a true team. They took turns on the nest throughout the day, swapping places with precision, swapping places in shifts of about 20 to 60 minutes. The eggs were rarely left alone, and the care and patience they showed felt almost meditative to observe.

The male was impossible to miss. While the female is elegant and subtle, he arrived with flair, those long white tail streamers flowing behind him as he flew in to relieve his partner. Seeing those long streamers trail behind him as he flew to the nest is a sight we will never forget.

We knew that after hatching, both parents would continue feeding and guarding their chicks for weeks. Sadly, our stay ended before we could see the next chapter unfold. Leaving the Mogobe Bar that last morning felt surprisingly emotional, like saying goodbye to familiar neighbours.”
