A Different Lens on Limpopo-Lipadi

Landscape photographer and co-owner Alessandro approaches Limpopo-Lipadi from a slightly different angle. Instead of reaching for the longest lens, he suggests putting the zoom aside and stepping back. Here is his perspective:

“Here at Limpopo-Lipadi one of the most amazing features of the Reserve is the beauty and diversity of landscape. During the green season, the lush environment shines with green hues. The bush is very thick, seeing animals is a challenge, but when it happens, they can be immersed in beautiful surroundings.

During my recent stay, I’ve tried to expand this challenge even further. That is, instead of capturing a portrait of the animal and focusing on the subject – as most wildlife photos are usually taken – I aimed to compose the photo with the subject in relation with its environment, expanding the view and including more elements in the picture. This often means to switch to a wide-angle lens instead of a powerful telephoto and hoping for the subject’s collaboration to show up within the landscape in front of you!

Not an easy task, but Limpopo-Lipadi is like this: a challenging hide and seek where the rewards can be awesome. Sometimes the most rewarding image is not a tight portrait, but an animal placed exactly where it belongs, within the landscape of Limpopo-Lipadi.”
