Walking with rhino: a lesson in tracking

Co-owners Karen and Nigel recently joined a walk with our expert trackers, learning firsthand just how much skill goes into finding rhino on foot. Here’s what they shared:
“We learned to read the bush: checking rhino dung for warmth and moisture to work out how recently the animal passed, spotting wet mud on leaves, picking up scent from urine markings, and telling individual footprints apart at a busy crossing. We also learned to use the sun and Lipadi Hill to stay oriented in thick terrain.
The walk began in tall grass along the Longwope River, birdsong all around. After close to three hours of quiet tracking, the patience paid off: three rhino resting peacefully in the afternoon sun.
Our white rhinos are dehorned, and our Anti-Poaching Unit works alongside the Botswana Defence Force, patrolling the Reserve 24/7 to keep them safe.
Seeing them safe and undisturbed in their own habitat is always a reminder of why this work matters, and what a privilege it is to walk alongside the people who know this land so well.”
