A misty morning with the breeding herd

It was still early, mist still lingering over Limpopo-Lipadi, when these co-owners headed out into the Reserve. At first they only saw one adult bull, moving on his own, no breeding herd in sight.

Then, surprisingly, the rest of the breeding herd appeared too: the young ones tucked in close to their mothers, the matriarch leading the way, and the big bull right there by their side. A breeding herd like this is made up of the females, mothers, aunts, sisters and their calves, who stay together for life. The matriarch is usually the oldest of them, and the herd relies on her experience, where to find water, where it’s safe to move.

Bulls generally live apart from the breeding herd once they’re grown, alone or with a few other males, and only join when allowed to come close. This one stayed right by their side rather than keeping his distance, while the matriarch carried on setting the pace regardless.
The co-owners sat and enjoyed the encounter with the breeding herd for quite a while, until the elephants, just like that, disappeared into the thick mopane bush. That’s the privilege of a place like Limpopo-Lipadi: as a co-owner, you set your own pace, with the freedom and flexibility to stay as long as you like, and with nobody else around.
