Waterhole birding at Limpopo-Lipadi

Co-owner Anton Kruger (this time armed with his camera, and not forgetting it at home like in May this year…) spent countless hours at the waterholes of the Reserve this past school holidays. With October being one of the hottest, driest months, the waterholes were pumping with birds coming for a drink. Read his story below. “Nestled within the arid heart of Southern Africa, the Tuli block emerges as a rugged and enchanting landscape, where nature’s resilience comes to life. Within this region of the dry bushveld, one finds a remarkable sanctuary for both avian enthusiasts and lovers of untamed wilderness, and not forgetting big game including elephants, lions, leopards and African wild dogs! This is a place where a single, precious resource draws an array of birdlife as diverse as the bushveld itself – the waterhole. Birding at a waterhole in the Tuli block is an extraordinary experience, one that offers a captivating and dynamic window into the vibrant and delicate ecosystems that thrive amidst this seemingly harsh terrain. Here, amidst the stark beauty of the arid landscape, birds gather in a remarkable display of life, colour, and song, providing a vivid testament to the interconnectedness of all living things. On their routine morning coffee stops, Anton would skip coffee and position himself adjacent to the waterhole capturing intimate moments of birds including Blue, Violet-eared, and Black-faced Waxbills, Green-winged Pytilias, Lark-like and Golden-breasted Buntings, Cut-throat Finches, Great Sparrows and various Canaries while the kids play in the sand/mud…and off course keeping an eye out for an approaching elephant or leopard!” We share some of these intimate moments captured through Anton’s lens!
