Elephant and rhino side by side

By: Limpopo-Lipadi | Date: Jan 29, 2024 | Reserve

A couple of years ago Limpopo-Lipadi faced the sad loss of a rhino female which had gotten into a fight with an elephant. This happened at a waterhole that was consequently named after this rhino. Rhino and elephant are both known to attack with brute force, have incredible stamina and are equally intelligent – which is perhaps why they don’t typically fight. They will usually avoid confrontation with one another. Although, in some cases fights break out when either one is disturbed, provoked, or competing for food. Which is what at the time unfortunately happened at our Reserve.
While quietly driving up to this waterhole around sunset, these co-owners were fortunate to find two rhino drinking. They turned off the engine and witnessed how the rhino were joined by two bull elephants who were equally eager to quench their thirst. Such a special sight, those two giant species in one place! The rhino were a bit jittery, but continued drinking for a bit longer, until their instincts got the better of them and they decided to make a move.
