Wild Dogs – Back in View
By: Limpopo-Lipadi | Date: Mar 27, 2026 | Sightings
For some time, sightings of Limpopo-Lipadi’s wild dog pack had been limited. After a very late denning season, extending beyond August, the pack remained largely elusive in the months that followed. They kept to rocky and densely vegetated areas, making observations rare. Apart from occasional camera trap images and confirmations from our anti-poaching unit and research manager, there was little direct contact.
That changed recently. Tracks were picked up not far from the Reserve gate, and shortly afterwards seven wild dogs appeared on and near the road. For many co-owners, it was the first sighting in quite some time.
Among them was the male that had been injured by a snare in March last year. Despite losing part of his leg, he looked healthy and strong, moving energetically on three legs. His condition is a clear example of the resilience of this species and the strength of their social structure. African wild dogs are highly cooperative animals, and injured members are often supported by the pack.
Also present were the three pups, now well grown but still playful and energetic. Their presence is encouraging and reflects a successful breeding season despite the pack’s late denning.
To see them together again, visible and settled, was simply a joy. The limping male keeping up without hesitation, the younger dogs pushing and playing, the pack constantly interacting as wild dogs do. A solid, healthy pack back on the move.
