Often the only focus on game drives are big furry/hairy stuff. The focus is always on finding, lion, leopard, elephant etc… But as the earth begins to warm up, sometimes all goes quiet in the bush. This is the perfect time to spend some time at a waterhole and observe the magnitude of birds coming in to quench their thirst.

We usually use our game viewer as a mobile hide, where we would lie flat on our tummies underneath the vehicle to get eye-level with the birds, and of course protection from the sun and threat of larger mammals coming for a drink!

To observe the coming and going of Waxbills, Firefinches, Barbets, Pytilias and many more are always a highlight of our trips to Limpopo-Lipadi. This is not possible at traditional lodges, or even Kruger NP, which makes for a unique experience.

On your next visit, bring your bird book along and spend a couple of hours at a waterhole. You will be amazed at how many different species come for a drink!
