With the abundance of migratory and resident birdlife in these green months, there’s also a lot of nesting going on.
Which in turn sadly also attracts raptors. On several occasions we bore witness to birds of prey raiding the nests of smaller birds like weavers, finding eggs or small chicks as a tasty and easy meal option. Lesser-spotted eagles dangling dangerously on masked weaver birds’ nests, geese chasing raptors away with flapping wings and loud squeaks. And on one such occasion, a juvenile Wahlberg eagle tested his luck but was met by fierce attacks from the parents. We can’t be sure that the chicks survived, but these photos are in praise of the courageous parents.
